Client: David Gooley
Industry: Architectural Steel, Metalwork and Glazing
We specialise in steel, glass, architectural products. From two people and nothing, to, as of last week I think there was 60 people and we’re turning over about $AUD3.5 million a month at the moment. The biggest problem we had as a business was very few people doing everything. So we were exhausted from working 100 hours a week, never feeling like you were catching up or getting ahead.
Since we’ve been working with Keith, there’s a lot more structure within the business and we’ve bought in a lot of really good people, particularly in the last 12 months. What we were doing with 10 people a year ago, we’re now doing three times the amount of work, but with only 20 in the office. In the last 6 months we’ve tendered over 150 million dollars worth of work. If I was getting bogged down with all that non-urgent stuff then that wouldn’t be happening. My first 90 day plan was purely based around my family. Three mornings a week now I basically come in at around nine to nine thirty, so I hang out with the kids in the morning, occasionally do a school run. By having an outsider, critiquing what you’re doing, it’s a huge benefit. [Coaching] has really helped me to focus on what’s important rather than what’s urgent, because everything is urgent in business. But by focussed on what’s important has been a real eye opener. Once you realise what you don’t know it’s quite easy to rectify with those guys [at Action Victoria] assisting in the background.
